Research and Planning: E4 and the Brief

E4 is a British digital television channel, owned by Channel Four Television Corporation . E4 first came to our screens on the 18th of January 2001 and has been going as Channel 4's companion ever since. The programmes which are most regularly shown are How I Met Your Mother?, The Big Bang Theory, Hollyoaks, The Inbetweeners, Shameless, One Tree Hill, Suburgatory, New Girl, desperate housewives and many more. The primary target audience for E4 are Teenagers  from the age of 15 to around 25 years old. The secondary audience are young adults from 20 to 40 years old.The other channels Channel Four Television Corporation are Film 4, 4Music, Channel 4 itself, More4 and all the +1 channels. The target audience for Film 4 are film lovers but it really depends on the time of day. 4Music is the same as Film 4, it really depends on the time of day. Channel 4 tends to be older people. More 4s target audience is again older people for the more intellectual programs. The +1 channels tend to be for the busy people who want to catch up because they have missed the program earlier.

An E sting is a brand ident for E4. An E sting's purpose is to basically showcase the channel as best it can.
Here you can see an official E4 E sting. This E sting is a comedy genre much like the channel E4 itself. The audience for this piece is young adults. The content is very well created using claymation I believe and possibly stop motion. I really like the way this E sting was created using a simple clay making such a great outcome.

Here you can see another E4 E sting. This E sting is again a comedy genre I believe. The audience for this piece is a little older than usually but not much different to young adults. The content is a simple development from the beginning with the fish to a 21st century man showing how the world has maybe developed. I really like the way it developed so simply and still used the comedy genre.
Here is my third E4 E sting. This E4 E sting is like the rest a comedy genre. The audience for this piece are again young adults. The content is two stop motion teddy bears fighting over the E4 logo. I like the way the stop motion is so smooth on this piece.

The first lot of planning and preparation I have done for this project is creating a thaumatrope, praxinoscope and zoetrope. Below you can see the videos for them.
This is the thaumatropes the class made and the intention was to draw two parts of one image and when spun with the string would look like it was one image animated. My thaumatrope is 16 seconds through.
This is the praxinoscopes the class made and the intention was to draw a series of images which each time would change and make a moving picture once spun on the device. My praxinoscope is 43/44 seconds through.
This is the zoetropes the class made and the intention was to again draw a series of changing images to create a moving picture once spun. Unfortunately I didn't get chance to film my zoetrope with the class so will film it in my own time.

This is the video of my claymation piece and the intention was to create a clay character and use stills to animate it and bring it to life. Below are all my character plans, bio and the location design.
This is the character plan and bio for my Claymation character.
This is the original location design but i used a different background for my final piece.
This is the video of my live action SMA and the intention was to use stills of people moving to create a flowing animation. We were really going for a racing type animation quite like 'Fast and Furious' how they place their bets on the race and then race.
For my final

stop motion E sting I would like to use figures in a live action piece. This could class as claymation because you are using figures but I feel my piece would be more live action. The reason why I have made this decision is because I feel that making a clay character again was to much hassle due to the colours mixing and the figures getting ruined and I feel if I was to create a figure live action piece it would work really well.

  1. Megan,

Good planning and pre-production here. You still need to add any storyboards, recces, releases, budget sheets etc and also any notes on soundtrack (and copyright).
