A brief itself is either a set of instructions given to a person about a job or a task or it is an instruction given in prep for a task. The brief/project brief we were given was to create a professional video product and to ensure that the created product and to ensure that the created product is suitable for a specified target audience. Commission means you pass responsibility for something onto someone else. So I could get commissioned to produce a channel ident which means I would be given responsibility for it by someone else. In regards to media, tender means an offer from a company for people to complete a project for them for a stated price. So if i was given a brief there may be an offer of payment for when the brief is completed. You could respond to a brief in multiple ways including interpreting the given instructions in hand and creating what is requested.
When given a brief you have to be prepared to meet required deadlines and regulations. A great example of a brief with rules and regulations and deadlines is the E4 Esting brief. When we were presented with this brief the first thing we had to find out what was specified guidance/criteria had to be met. The reason why is because if this criteria isn't met then the product may not be suitable for the brief and may result in disqualification.
When given our brief I feel we had quite a bit of room to negotiate in some areas. For example we had the choice of the idea, how we portrayed the brief and we also had the choice of which background music we had. In a way we had some room to maneuver with the brief. In the media industry, I believe the level of discretion you would have when interpreting a brief would be quite high. I feel in the industry you would have a lot more freedom then in the classroom purely because there is a lot more to work with out in the real world. When responding to a brief, you may face a numerous list of constraints. These constraints may vary from legal which could be copyrighted music to ethical which could be that you haven't got accurate information, you've used someone or something else's private information or even that you may not have the rights to use the information. When we had our brief the main constraints we had to face were mainly ethical and regulatory issues mainly copyright and the regulations from E4 itself. Managing to overcome these issues were hard but we all managed to do it. When making our proposed final product, we had to re-film after the first shoot was complete as a few bits were out of time. The reason for this amendment is because we felt it would look better if we worked on it a bit more. In the media industry, there might be amendments made to the budget because the company may need more for various things such as talent and props. There may be amendments to your fee because the budget may not be big enough, the job you have done may not have been good enough or you may have done a better job then expected. There may be amendments made to the conditions outlined in the contract due to change elsewhere in the production.
Someone might respond to a brief as it may start them off in a business. Accepting a new brief can be a great opportunity for many to start a new project and its also a great way to earn a new job or a bit of money. Within this brief, I have had many opportunities for self-development. The first opportunity was when we were set the task of coming up with an individual idea for an Esting. This really gave me time to develop my creative side. I have learnt new skills including how to make an animation flow and how to edit stop motion animation together. One very important skill I have learnt is how to meet critical deadlines. This has not only helped me with this brief but will continue to help me for a while. The only point during this brief where I feel I had to multi-skill was when filming. I had to film as well as figuring out where to move next. My contributions to the project brief include coming up with the idea, filming whilst my partner animated the bear and finally I did my half of the editing.
Megan,
ReplyDeleteYou have covered everything necessary to get a pass and you are well on the way to a merit, to get a merit:
- format the post properly and add evidence, e.g., images, quotes, reference list etc
- check your definition for 'tender' as it isn't 100% right
- find real examples of briefs and show them/link to them.
Good start,
